stranger experience (laura and danae)
after asking several different people for directions, we were able to get a drawn map from a student waiting in line to get coffee from joe’s. it was interesting that in each of our attempts, people seemed hesitant and resistant to drawing a map (one student offered “i can’t draw” as an excuse). the student’s first instinct was to tell us that he didn’t know where it was, but then proceeded to pull out his phone and show us what low library looked like from a google search. some further questioning/prompting resulted in this map, which was drawn as a way to explain how to exit the building, walk around the corner of 120th street down to 116th and enter campus from that direction because it was easier to explain than directing us within the campus. the second student who explained he couldn’t draw actually walked us over to the library despite being asked to draw us directions, and attempted to describe how to get there with large landmarks as references (the alma matter statue out front).
